NCIS DVD Box SetWith an effort dedicated to teammate Salvador Cabanas, who was shot in the head in January, Paraguay defeats Japan on penalty kicks to get past the second round for the first time.NCIS Seasons DVD Box Set Reporting from Pretoria, South Africa — Physically, Salvador Cabanas was half a world away when Edgar Barreto prepared to take the penalty shot that would help decide Paraguay's World Cup future.Spiritually, however, Barreto said he felt like his former teammate was standing right behind him. "His spirit is with the team," Barreto said. "He's always close to us."Cabanas should have been on the field Tuesday as Paraguay, which defeated Japan, 5-3, on penalty kicks after a 0-0 draw, moved into the World Cup quarterfinals for the first time in its history. Instead he was in South America, recuperating from a near-fatal shooting that left him with a bullet in his head.Gone, perhaps, but certainly not forgotten."Before we go out to train or whatever, we think of him. We know that he's over there but we know he's supporting us," Paraguay striker Edgar Benitez said.Which is why Cabanas' ex-teammates are doing what they can to support him. Knowing they were guaranteed only three games in South Africa, the Paraguayans dedicated their first-round matches to Cabanas. They went on to win their group, eliminating the defending tournament champions from Italy along the way. "We called him in his room," midfielder Cristian Riveros said. "We sent him a big hug."Then came Tuesday, when Paraguay battled Japan through 120 scoreless minutes, setting up a penalty-kick shootout to determine which team would move on. Japan was the strongest team in the tournament on free kicks. Paraguay, with three goals, was the lowest-scoring group winner in the World Cup.Yet it was Japan that flinched when Yuichi Komano's shot in the third round struck the crossbar. When Nelson Valdez and Oscar Cardozo followed by burying their attempts, Paraguay's improbable run NCIS 1-7 DVD Box Setcontinued."We've dedicated this to him," said Barreto, who set the tone for the shootout by beating Japanese keeper Eiji Kawashima with the first shot. It's unlikely any of this happens without Cabanas, whose six goals in World Cup qualifying led the team and made Paraguay the second South American team to clinch a berth in the tournament. Then came the morning of Jan. 25 NCIS DVD when Cabanas, in Mexico City to play for his club team, walked into restroom on his way out of a trendy nightclub in an upscale neighborhood. He never walked out.Shot in the head at close range, Cabanas was originally given little chance to live. Six months later he wants to play soccer again — and even NCIS Box Setthough the bullet remains lodged in his brain, doctors have learned better than to bet against Cabanas.Paraguay is also defying heavy odds.By beating Japan, it became the first Paraguayan team to get past the second round. Paraguay plays Spain on Saturday."It's historic. But we're not satisfied with that," said Cardozo. "We want to go further. And we have the talent to go further."They certainly have the motivation, said Paraguay Coach Gerardo Martino, who broke down in tears on the bench after Cardozo's winning kick."Salvador's story is a very NCIS DVD Setsensitive issue for the whole of Paraguay," Martino said earlier this month. "He is a great inspiration to us and for us. To do it in tribute to Salvador is a big motivation."Added defender Aureliano Torres: "We know that he's enjoying [this] like we are." Cold War meets 21st century meets 'burger summit'
The Department of Justice's complaints against the 11 alleged spies are rich in details and read like a spy novel from the Cold War. Except that in this case, the men and women accused of spying for Russia were using 21st-Century technology and the Cold War is over.
In fact, just last week, the Russian and American presidents shared a burger and fries for lunch.
So what were the alleged spies up to? They were apparently making friends with powerful or knowledgeable Americans in places like New York, New Jersey, Boston and Washington.
They hobnobbed with top New York financiers, former US government officials who knew about nuclear research and members of Congress.
They were asked by their bosses to 'Americanise' themselves - they bought houses and tried to blend in.
They had false identities but the court papers don't specify what they posed as: journalists? Researchers? Socialites?
From what we know so far, they were asked to "search and develop ties in policymaking circles in US" and send back intelligence.
Some of what they were said to be after, like information about nuclear "bunker-buster" warheads, seems rather serious.
The Department of Justice has, however, made clear that none of the information at stake was classified.
In fact it is a bit unclear what the suspects actually managed to get their hands on. 'Boston conspirators'
Most of what the alleged spies were after seems almost anodyne.
In a message from their headquarters, the "Boston conspirators" - as some of the suspects are described in the complaint - are asked to gather information regarding among other things, US policy on the use of the internet by terrorists, US policy in Central Asia, problems with US military policy and Western estimations of Russian foreign policy.
Before President Barack Obama's trip to Moscow last year, for example, they were tasked with finding out more about US foreign policy on Afghanistan and information about Iran's nuclear programme.
This is the kind of above-board information that political officers at most embassies would be gleaning through conversations with policy-makers and government officials, writing up in a report and sending back to headquarters.
Diplomats from allied Western countries, like the UK or France, for example, are in regular, sometimes daily, contact with US officials.
They exchange information, often sensitive, and intelligence material and have candid conversations with their American counterparts.
For Russian and Chinese diplomats access is more difficult, less open, conversations in their presence likely more guarded.
The information gleaned by this alleged spy ring - no matter how anodyne it may look - may still have been of value to Moscow.
It is worth keeping in mind that some of Russians involved in this apparent spy ring were sent here in the 1990s, when the Cold War had just ended and the level of mistrust was still very high.
One almost wonders whether they were forgotten in the US - except that the complaint does detail those very recent requests for information

Tévez Scores Twice as Argentina Advances
ghost whisperere box setIt was forward Carlos Tévez who said the words no one else was willing to speak: the only satisfactory World Cup for Argentina would be to win it. ghost whisperere dvd box set “Nothing else will do,” Tévez said before the tournament opened.
On Sunday night, the bullish Tévez edged his team one step closer, scoring two goals — one while clearly offside — in a 3-1 victory over Mexico and advancing unbeaten Argentina to the quarterfinals, where it will face Germany on Saturday.
“I needed a match like this to prove I’m happy, I’m well and that I really want to go for glory,” Tévez said. ghost whisperere dvd set
Glory remained out of Mexico’s grasp yet again as it exited the World Cup for the fifth consecutive time in the second round — twice in a row to Argentina. Javier Aguirre, Mexico’s coach, renewed a demoralized team last year and spoke boldly of rewriting history, only to learn that it can be stubborn and inflexible. true blood dvd box set
Mexico’s defeat was built on controversy and carelessness. It was the stronger team in the early minutes, adamantly trying to score a quick goal to set Argentina on its heels. In the eighth minute, defender Carlos Salcido rocketed a shot from 40 yards that rasped off the crossbar.
In the 26th minute, everything changed.
Lionel Messi waterbugged through the middle on a counterattack, passing ahead to Tévez in the penalty area. Óscar Pérez, the Mexican goalkeeper, rushed off his line and dived for the ball but could not smother it.
The ball popped up to Messi, and he chipped it blithely to Tévez, whose header into an empty net from four yards put Argentina ahead, 1-0.
Tévez was indisputably beyond the final Mexican defenders when the ball was played to him, but the referee’s assistant did not raise his flag. Mexico argued vehemently for an offside call. Roberto Rosetti, the Italian referee, conferred with his assistant, Stefano Ayroldi, but did not nullify the goal. Afterward, Aguirre offered only tepid complaint. true blood dvd set
“Referees take split-second decisions and they can spoil everything,” he said, but he also acknowledged, “Everybody is human on the pitch.”
After that disputed goal, Mexico lost its concentration and its will, Aguirre said. Seven minutes later, defender Ricardo Osorio made a lazy pass, or somehow mistook Argentina’s Gonzalo Higuaín for a teammate out of the corner of his eye. true blood dvd
In either case, Higuaín intercepted the ball, snaked past Pérez and ruthlessly made Osorio pay, scoring his fourth goal of the World Cup to put Argentina ahead, 2-0. true blood box set
Now Mexico was defeated. At halftime, forward Giovani dos Santos attempted to renew debate about the first goal, but Rosetti waved him away. A scuffle involving players from both teams then flared behind Mexico’s bench. Order was quickly restored, but Mexico’s frustration was evident.
Tévez scored again on a blast from 25 yards in the 52nd minute, putting Argentina ahead, 3-0. Mexico finally got a goal, from Javier Hernández in the 71st minute, but the game had long been decided.
Asked later about the contentious first goal, the excitable Argentine coach, Diego Maradona, offered little sympathy. He complained instead about the rough play against Messi, his star playmaker.
“What’s being done to Messi is a scandal,” Maradona said. “They don’t look for the ball. They look for his legs and kick him.”
He assumed a more playful tone when asked about the difference between winning as a coach and a player.
“Of course, I feel like putting on the jersey and going onto the pitch,” said Maradona, who took Argentina to the 1986 World Cup title.
He added: “There is not a major difference. Of course, when you are on the pitch, you run and you can scream things you cannot scream on the bench.”
Maradona also seemed amused that his scuffed reputation as a coach had been elevated so quickly during the World Cup.
“They said I had no idea and suddenly I’m winning four matches and people see me as someone else,” he said. “I’m still the same person.”
Tévez sprinted to the corner flag after his first goal, put a fistful of his jersey in his mouth and bit it joyously. Later, he seemed slightly annoyed that Maradona had replaced him in the 69th minute.
“I was asking for the ball every moment,” Tévez said. “I didn’t understand why I was substituted.” true blood dvd box set
But when Tévez arrived at the bench, Maradona hugged him tightly. Theirs has been a congenial relationship. Messi is Argentina’s best and most celebrated player, but Tévez is its spirit. He is all power and determination, knowing only one way, and that is straight ahead.
Maradona refers to Tévez fondly as Carlitos. Both are from poor backgrounds and enjoy a populist authenticity in Argentina. Tévez was accidentally scalded by boiling water as a child but has refused to have the scar on his face cosmetically altered, considering it essential to his character.
“Carlitos cannot be off the team — even more than Messi,” Maradona said before the World Cup. “Tévez is an idol of the people.” www.dvdorderonline.com
He views Tévez like a son, Maradona said. “I felt that the moment I met him. He has a hunger and a passion for football.” ghost whisperere dvd

Impact on Seafood Prices Is Limited
Desperate Housewives DVD Box SetThe Gulf of Mexico oil spill is pushing up prices for shrimp and oysters from those waters but having limited impact on the larger U.S. seafood industry.
Here's why: The U.S. imports about 83% of its seafood and just 2% of domestic supplies come from the Gulf.
That's no comfort for Gulf fisheries, of course, which have been devastated by the spill that has gone on for two months now.
The average wholesale price of Gulf brown shrimp has jumped by more than half since before the spill as fishing restrictions have closed down large swaths of the once-prolific fishery. Oyster prices are up 33% over the same period, according to Urner Barry, a company that tracks commodity prices, including seafood.Desperate Housewives Seasons DVD Box Set
Industry officials expect those prices to continue increasing. "It's almost impossible to tell how bad it's going to be," said Robert Santangelo of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's National Marine Fisheries Service. The spill in the Gulf is having some effect on prices of other seafood. Prices for imported white shrimp have risen more than 17%, partly because of fears that there could be shortages in the market, said Gavin Gibbons, a spokesman for the National Fisheries Institute, a trade group that represents the seafood industry.Desperate Housewives DVD Set
But because imports dominate the market, consumers and retailers will not likely see dramatic changes in pricing or availability unless they are specifically looking for Gulf products, Mr. Gibbons said. Case in point: 90% of shrimp is imported and prices for those should decline as production is expected to increase through June and July.Desperate Housewives Seasons Box Set
Prices for finfish from the Gulf have remained relatively steady, as these fish account for only about 1% of the national consumable finfish market and are at about 70% of regular production volume, compared with about 25% for shrimp and 30% to 40% for oysters. In 2008, the most recent year for which data are available, the Gulf states of Alabama, Florida, Louisiana, Mississippi and Texas harvested almost 188.5 million pounds of shrimp and more than 20.4 million pounds of oysters, worth approximately $366.2 million and $59.9 million in revenue, respectively.Desperate Housewives Seasons DVD The spill may ultimately have the most impact on oysters, since the Gulf produces 67% of the U.S. supply.
The Grand Central Oyster Bar in New York City is paying 10% more for its shucked oysters, and customers are just beginning to foot the bill.
"We've only hit the tip of the iceberg with this disaster," said Executive Chef Sandy Ingber. "I foresee it getting worse before it gets better before they clean it up, but that can be a long time."Desperate Housewives Seasons 1-6 To offset the rising cost, the Oyster Bar has raised prices slightly for dishes that use shucked oysters—this week's menu offers oyster stew for $10.25, 30 cents more than in April.
The oysters are from Maryland, but suppliers have raised prices for non-Gulf products in light of high demand. Desperate Housewives DVD Dirk Fucik, owner of Dirk's Fish and Gourmet Shop in Chicago, has kept prices steady by selling frozen stocks of last season's shrimp.
In Denver, Jax Fish House hasn't changed its menu but the restaurant preemptively shifted its business from Gulf shrimp to other sources in hopes of staving off a price increase, said Jamey Fader, Jax's culinary director.
Until the oil well is capped, officials cannot determine which areas are most damaged and whether the Gulf fishing industry will be affected long-term, said Mr. Gibbons of the National Fisheries Institute. He said the U.S. seafood supply was safe for consumption; the NOAA last week announced plans to test Gulf products dockside for contamination.Desperate Housewives Box Set
Meanwhile, many seafood buyers worry about other looming threats. Just one major storm could transform the seafood industry, the Oyster Bar's Mr. Ingber said.Desperate Housewives 1-6 on DVD Box Set
"I'm pretty sure one hurricane is going to go through the Gulf and it's going to cause mass havoc and at that point everything could be shut down from there," he said.Desperate Housewives Seasons 1-6
Wholesalers, retailers and consumers can of course adapt to supply disruptions. If red snapper is off the menu, customers can find substitutes; and a $1 to $2 increase per pound of shrimp will not put high-end seafood restaurants out of business, said David Samuels, owner of Blue Ribbon Fish Company.
The fishermen and shrimpers, however, are in the eye of the storm.
"It'll affect my livelihood, yes, but not very much. I speak to these people I've known for decades in Florida and Louisiana and Mississippi—they're looking at a catastrophic situation," Mr. Samuels said. "For me it'd be a monetary issue and certainly a pain in the neck, but I'm not looking at the abyss. Some of them are looking at the abyss."Desperate Housewives Seasons 1-6 DVD Box Set

Tornado kills 2; major damage in Wadena
The Polk County sheriff is reporting Minnesota's second death from a series of tornadoes that have ripped through the state. Bones Seasons 1-5 DVD Box Set
The sheriff's department says a man was killed when a twister hit the Cenex station in Mentor, in northwest Minnesota.
The tornado destroyed the gas station and four vehicles. Three other people were hurt when the tornado hit about 6:30 p.m. Thursday. Earlier, authorities in Otter Tail County reported a woman killed by a tornado in Almora. bones seasons dvd
An elderly woman was killed and her husband was taken to the hospital when a tornado destroyed their home in Almora, a small town of about 20 people, said Otter Tail County Emergency spokesman David Hauser. At least three people were injured, he said.
"This house the deceased couple lived in, it does not exist any more. It's absolutely gone," said Jeff Hage, editor of The Daily Journal of nearby Fergus Falls. Debris including shingles and pieces of buildings littered the town. Several large trees were uprooted. bones seasons 1-5
“We know that there are several other people who were injured,” Hauser said.
Several tornados touched down in the county along a 20-mile swath running from Almora to Bluffton and then into Wadena County, Hauser said. At least eight to 10 homes were destroyed, he said. Power lines are down, substations aren’t operating and roads and railroad crossings are closed, he added. bones series dvd
Wadena was among the hardest hit by high winds. There are reports of damage to the Wadena High School and reports of gas leaks, downed buildings and scattered debris.
"There's a lot of damage," said Joanne Ostlund, who works in the Wadena city offices and was waiting out the storm with co-workers. "My garage and shed are gone and one of our neighbors lost an entire farmsite." bones box set
The storm that crashed into Wadena tore up about a 10-block residential area, ripping up old oak and elm trees, tearing off roofs and damaging buildings. “It’s a whole different horizon now,” said Randy Mohs, who drove through town after the storm. bones dvd

“It’s cork-screwed across the street. It’s twisted like a candy wrapper,” Mohs said. “There are a lot of sirens, ambulances, police. There are helicopters flying. … It’s a mess.”

“My brother’s farm is pretty much gone,” she said. “The barns are gone. The house is damaged.”
Hill and her husband tried to reach her brother’s farm but roads were blocked. Then she tried to check on her sister in Wadena, but entrances to the town were blocked.
“The roads are filled with debris — 2-by-4s, metal from buildings, power lines,” she said. “We have no electricity. No telephone service. It was bad. It will be a while before recovery happens.” bones dvd set
The Douglas County Sheriff reports officers are helping respond to several injuries in Otter Tail County, but Ostlund said she wasn't sure whether there were any injuries in Wadena, which sits on the border between Otter Tail and Wadena counties.
The storm, which hit the area at about 4 p.m., was on its way out about 90 minutes later.
"It's starting to get clear here," Ostlund said. "But there are more clouds in the distance."
A trained spotter reported a funnel cloud in Stearns County at about 5:30 p.m.
Shingles and other debris were scattered in the streets of downtown Wadena, and much of the area was without power, said an employee at The Uptown restaurant, which was planning to serve dinner regardless. bones season 5 release date
Hail up to 4 inches in diameter was also reported in nearby Douglas County. Hail dominated reports across southern Minnesota, with a report of 2 ½ -inch stones near Fairfax, about 100 miles southwest of the Twin Cities. Bone dvd box set

Germany Opens With Rout of Australia
It would have been perfectly understandable if Joachim Löw’s German team had opened this FIFA World Cup DVD looking unsettled instead of in tune.
Much has occurred that could have rattled the Nationalmannschaft in the run-up to South Africa. Goalkeeper Robert Enke, battling depression, committed suicide in November, and his replacement, Rene Adler, was ruled out because of an injury.
Michael Ballack — Germany’s longtime captain and biggest star — did not make it, either, after he damaged ligaments in his ankle in last month’s FIFA World Cup DVD final.
There was also the potential flip side of success: Bayern Munich, which provides more players to the national team than any other, reached the Champions League final, which was good news for German soccer but delayed its players from taking full part in Löw’s squad-building preparations. And Löw has had his own issues, having failed to agree on a contract extension with his federation that would take him beyond the FIFA World Cup DVD.
But by the time Germany had finished pounding balls into the back of the Australian net Sunday night, none of that seemed significant. Lacking Ballack and lacking experience in key positions, the Germans still roared to a 4-0 victory and an early share of first place in Group D with their next opponent, Ghana.
The Germans’ victory was no surprise. Though the Australians reached the second round in the 2006 World Cup, they are an aging team without an established striker whose players generally earn their livings in second-tier leagues.
What was startling was the manner of the victory. It was an attention-demanding blend of the Germans’ traditional precision with a new creative streak, much of it because of the deft feet and lively soccer mind of Mesut Özil, a 21-year-old center midfielder.
“I think we all knew they were candidates for the World Cup, and they showed they have a fantastic team,” said Pim Verbeek, Australia’s coach. “Every player they brought into the team, they made the team not weaker but stronger.”
There was flair in abundance, particularly down the right flank, where outside back Philipp Lahm, Ballack’s replacement as the German captain, likes to roam far upfield and where Özil and an even younger talent, the 20-year-old attacking midfielder Thomas Müller, kept overwhelming the Australian defense.
That defense looked daunting at first glance, with all 10 outfield players, including striker Tim Cahill, forming a tight zonal block. But the Germans kept finding the fault lines and dashing into open spaces with the ball at their feet.
Müller set up the first goal in the eighth minute with a low cross that skidded untouched through the Australian penalty area until the German wing Lukas Podolski, running free, struck it hard with his left foot from 12 yards. The veteran goalkeeper Mark Schwarzer got his right hand on the ball, but that was not enough to stop it from rebounding into the goal.
Miroslav Klose scored the second goal on a header in the 26th minute after he beat Schwarzer to a long cross from Lahm inside the penalty area.
“I think we were pretty good,” Podolski said. “From the very first to the very last minute, we had great attacks and also put the opponents under pressure, and I think we implemented perfectly well what we wanted to do.”
In the 56th minute, Cahill was expelled from the game for a dangerous tackle in which he caught midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger on the outside of his left knee. Müller and the substitute striker Cacau soon added the last two German goals.
Klose and Podolski were the two main attacking threats for Germany in the last FIFA World Cup DVD, when it reached the semifinals under Low’s former boss, Jürgen Klinsmann.
“I simply know I can rely on these players, even if they might not score in one match or if they go through a bad patch,” Löw said of Klose and Podolski.
Lahm and defenders Arne Friedrich and Per Mertesacker are also part of the bridge between that 2006 team and this one, which is a reflection of modern German society with its mix of ethnicities.
Özil is the son of former Turkish guest workers in Germany. Sami Khedira, who has replaced Ballack as a holding midfielder, is the 23-year-old son of Tunisian and German parents. Cacau, a Brazilian by birth, became a German citizen last year.
Together, they and their teammates made quite an impression Sunday night. The question is how much of it had to do with the Australians and how much of it had to do with them.
“There will be more difficult opponents to play, but this was a good warm-up,” Löw said. “We will be happy about this one, but there is no need to get euphoric.”

Mexico and South Africa soccer fans enjoy opening game of 2010 World Cup
At the Maldonado house in Alexandria, the decor made a statement but loudly and proudly. A Mexican soccer jersey hung on the wall. A Mexican ball cap sat next to the TV. A Mexican scarf from the 2002 FIFA World Cup DVD hung across the mantel.
And there, 15 fans in green Mexican jerseys issued predictions Friday morning over the blare of the Univision telecast, as they eagerly awaited the opening match of the 2010 World Cup.
Like thousands of others in the region, the Maldonados left Mexico -- they came from Guadalajara about 15 years ago -- but did not leave behind their love of Mexican fútbol.
"This is huge," said Pepe Maldonado, who played soccer at Virginia Commonwealth University and professionally in Mexico's top league. "It's a holiday -- it's a national holiday."
Pepe's younger brother, Esteban, roots for both the Mexican and U.S. soccer teams -- unless they are playing each other. "I root for Mexico because I grew up watching Mexico with my parents, so I'm more towards Mexico," said Esteban Maldonado, who was a 2004 All-Met Soccer Player of the Year and played for James Madison University.
Some friends not of Mexican descent also showed up to support Mexico. "Just being a part of the same region [of the world], you want them to do well," said Costa Rica native Kyle Morsink, whose brother Kurt plays for D.C. United.
Three minutes into the match, Mexican striker Giovani dos Santos appeared to have scored a goal. The Maldonados erupted with excitement, then erupted again -- with disappointment -- when they saw that the South African goalkeeper had blocked the shot.
In Northwest Washington, along Embassy Row, South African soccer fans made their own distinct noise as they watched the first Cup match to be hosted by an African nation.
Like many of the more than 90,000 people at Johannesburg's Soccer City stadium, the fans at the Embassy of South Africa's Cup kickoff party made loud buzzing sounds with their vuvuzela horns.
To add to the percussive thrum of heated fandom, BamBams -- inflatable rods that produce a sharp click when slammed together -- were handed out at the embassy door.
Even the attire was a mite noisy. South African fans wore bright yellow-and-green jerseys, and a few were capped with makarapas -- tricked-out construction helmets sporting the team logo.

Shakira, Peas & Keys perform at World Cup concert
The world came to Soweto on Thursday for a celebration of soccer, music and unity on the eve of Africa's first World Cup dvd collcetion, with a concert featuring international headliners Shakira, the Black Eyed Peas and Alicia Keys.
Warm-up acts played for hours before the internationally televised portion of the concert at Orlando Stadium began at 8 p.m. with a frenzy of flag waving, drumming and African-inspired dancing.
Veteran South African trumpeter Hugh Masekela took the stage with "Grazin' in the Grass" a No. 1 international hit in 1968. He was quickly joined by a new South African star, Lira, who covered the late Miriam Makeba's "Pata Pata", another worldwide hit that originated in South Africa.
The Black Eyed Peas were next with a slick medley of their hits, then it was back to Africa, with the blind duo Amadou & Mariam of Mali and their sinuous, driving sound.
Shakira, wearing an animal print, waka waka-ed — the anthem and dance of the FIFA World Cup DVD. The turbaned Tinariwen brought the sounds of Mali's desert nomads to the mix. The crowd swayed to Keys, and did the toyi-toyi — the protest dance of the apartheid era — to hometown favorites BLK JKS. Colombian rocker Juanes, in a multicolored warm-up jacket, debuted his newest single, "Yerbatero" to cheers from the crowd.
No multistarred stadium show would be complete without everyone on stage for a rousing, closing anthem. Thursday, it was Sly and the Family Stone's "Everyday People," punctuated by fireworks.
An exuberant Archbishop Desmond Tutu, in full South African green-and-yellow fan regalia, was treated like a rock star as he led the crowd in cheers for Nelson Mandela, who is credited with sealing South Africa's bid to host the World Cup DVD COLLECTION.
Tutu also acknowledged the fans from around the world who have come to South Africa for soccer's premier event.
"We welcome you all. For Africa is the cradle of humanity, so we welcome you home," he said.
About a third of the seats at Soweto's 40,000-seat Orlando stadium were blocked off for the stage and backstage. Most of what was left were filled, as was a dance floor on the pitch.
The monthlong tournament the concert celebrates begins Friday at the main Soccer City stadium just outside Soweto, with host South Africa taking on Mexico. Organizers called the concert and the first game triumphs after years of questions about whether a world class event could be staged in a nation saddled with poverty and crime and still riven by the legacy of apartheid.
"This is a showcase," concertgoer Nana Masithela said as she entered Orlando on Thursday. "We are showcasing ourselves, to say, 'Blacks can do it!' "
Sepp Blatter, head of soccer's world governing body FIFA dvd collection, had pushed to bring the World Cup to Africa. He made a brief appearance during the concert to speak about 1GOAL, a campaign to improve education in impoverished countries. South African President Jacob Zuma, who took the stage with Blatter, thanked South Africans for the welcome they have given World Cup fans, and called on them "to show the warmness for the whole duration of the tournament."
Orlando, the venue for Thursday's concert, got a three-year, $43 million renovation as part of a nationwide building spree in preparation for the World Cup.
South Africans of all races filled Orlando, parading in the yellow and green of their national team, or draping themselves in their flag. Soccer fans from other countries also sported their colors.
Concertgoer Tumi Mohafa said the mix of races in the renovated stadium in an area where blacks once were confined is a sign of how far South Africa has come from apartheid, which ended in 1994.

England's World Cup recipe includes equal parts faith, fear
"England expects!" The phrase is everywhere: in the tabloids, on the radio, splashed across ads. It harks back to 1805, when the naval hero Horatio Nelson warned his sailors, "England expects that every man will do his duty."
Now the battle is not against Napoleon's warships but against the USA, which England faces Saturday in its first match of the 2010 World Cup.
So just what does England expect?
The nation's feelings about the faceoff in South Africa are a complicated brew that's as English as a pint in a pub. The mood here is a mixture of bravado and nerves, hope and fear, longing and self-doubt. The English soccer team is ranked eighth in the world, the USA 14th, but in a land steeped in tradition, the Three Lions' tradition consists of letting down the fans. And now fans never dare to voice expectations of victory without adding caveats.
OGUCHI ONYEWU: Ready for 90 minutes vs. England
"It's England that we're talking about, so nothing can ever run smoothly," says Neil Regelous, a London bank analyst. "Everyone builds us up to say, 'Yes, this time, we're going to win it!' And then we'll lose to a lesser nation."
England, the country that invented soccer and has one of the top pro leagues in the world, hasn't won the Cup since 1966. In this soccer-mad nation, that adds up to "44 years of hurt," in the words of the Daily Star Sunday.
Despite fans' apprehensions, anticipation is building for an event that unites the country as almost nothing else does. The white-and-red St. George's cross, the flag of England, flutters from cars and windows. Department store John Lewis reports TV sales are up 30% over last year.
"Historically, the World Cup has always been a big driver for TV sales," says John Kempner, a buyer at John Lewis.
Up to 20 million Brits are expected to tune in to watch the match, which starts at 7:30 p.m. local time, according to the Football Association. More than 1 million of the few who will be at work Saturday still plan to catch the game, pollster ComRes says.
Fans look forward to a time when the buttoned-up English become cheerful, even talkative.
Saturday's game "is going to be wicked, man," says Travis McKoy, a London security guard. "I love the World Cup. I love the feeling in London during the World Cup. I can't wait."
A series of disappointments
The best the Three Lions have done recently is to reach the semifinals, back in 1990. In 2002 and 2006, England didn't get past the quarterfinals.
"In the 44 years since '66, we've been let down, we've achieved nothing and all our hopes and dreams have crashed and died," says Tony Morris, a banking official who works in London and is flying to South Africa for the tournament. "We build ourselves up only to fall."
Yet English fans keep the faith.
Even when the players "have not been that good, it's, 'We're going to win the World Cup!' " says Tina Mermiri, a research manager in London.
Many fans are nourishing higher hopes than usual. England has a roster of strong and experienced players. Manager Fabio Capello already is being compared to Alf Ramsey, who guided England to its 1966 triumph. The team had one of its best qualifying seasons in recent memory, winning nine of 10 games.
The USA, on the other hand, still is regarded as a second-rate power, at least when it comes to "footie." After all, the USA has never done better in the tournament than third, way back in 1930. The tabloid The Sun, assigning each national team a role in Toy Story 3, said the USA was toy dinosaur Rex — "big and powerful but in reality there is no real menace to them."
Such perceptions led to widespread glee when the World Cup groups were announced in December. As part of Group C, England also faces low-ranked Slovenia and Algeria. The top two teams from the group will advance to the round of 16.
Paul White, a London lawyer, heard the news in a taxi.
"I cheered," he confesses, in part because "we can beat them."
English bookmakers have made the home team a 1-2 favorite vs. the USA. Asked by an American news reporter if he had any worries about dispatching the Yanks, truck driver George Curley of London scoffed, "Not at all. You don't play the game. You can't even get the name right."
But in the back of every England fan's mind is the niggling memory of a 1950 event known — to Americans — as the "Miracle on Grass." In one of the greatest upsets in World Cup history, England, then the "Kings of Football," was humbled 1-0 by a hastily assembled American lineup.
U.S. soccer invasion
The event has not slipped the Americans' minds either.
Saturday's match "is a chance to go into the history books like the 1950 side, and things like that prove what can happen," U.S. player Jay DeMerit said Tuesday.
Since 1950, the upstarts across the pond formed their own professional league, even poaching English star David Beckham, who defected to the Los Angeles Galaxy in 2007. Nine of the 23 members of the U.S. team played in England's pro leagues this season. Among them is goalkeeper Tim Howard, who starts for Everton.
The result is an intimate familiarity with the USA's first foe.
"The advantage we have is that we have played against most of the England guys before many times, so there is no intimidation factor," DeMerit, a defender for Watford, told reporters Sunday. "We know what they are capable of, and we are prepared."
After close study of the American presence on their home turf, the English are nervous. Fans and commentators alike praise the U.S. team's organization and strength.
"The USA are a fast, super-fit team of athletes," Nigel Worthington, manager of the Northern Ireland national team, wrote in the Sunday Mirror. "England will have to be mentally and physically right from the first whistle."
It didn't help that Rio Ferdinand, England's captain and most experienced defender, injured his knee during practice and had to bow out.
"It definitely is a blow," White says. "It is a weaker England team without Rio. The U.S. definitely has a chance to upset the England party."
Never mind that if England loses to the USA, the team could still progress to the next round. The expectation that England will polish off the ragamuffins from the Colonies means that a loss would be a humiliation.
"It would be a day of mourning the next day in England. The whole country would be in shock," says London lawyer Rowley Higgs, adding jokingly, "I'm not sure many of us would make it into work on Monday."
Such talk of national distress over a loss is no exaggeration, says Richard Elliott, director of the Lawrie McMenemy Centre for Football Research at Southampton Solent University.
"For the 90 minutes that they play, they are not 11 footballers wearing the three lions on their shirt," he says. "They become the English nation, and we judge ourselves by the performance on the pitch."
For fan Barry Thirlway, a London musician, the Three Lions will have his loyalty no matter how they do Saturday.
"You've got to stick with them even though it can be incredibly frustrating," he says. "Occasionally, they give you little bits and pieces and bring you joy that other things can't.
"We live in hope."

BP siphons off more oil
The London-based company's share price closed down 5 percent in London after U.S. President Barack Obama said he wanted to know "whose ass to kick" over the massive spill.
The on-going disaster remains at the top of Obama's crowded domestic agenda, a point underscored by his strong comments and Tuesday's announcement that he will head back to the Gulf coast next week to inspect efforts to contain the spill.
Obama will visit Mississippi, Alabama and Florida during a two-day trip beginning on Monday, the White House said.
BP already faces a criminal investigation and lawsuits over the April 20 explosion aboard the Deepwater Horizon oil rig that killed 11 workers and triggered the 50-day-old oil spill, the worst in U.S. history.
Efforts to contain the mess forged ahead.
BP said on Tuesday it had collected 14,800 barrels of oil from the leaking well on Monday, 33 percent higher than the amount collected on Sunday and the highest capture rate since it installed a new system last week to contain the spill.
BP later said it collected 7,850 barrels of oil in the 12-hour stretch ended at noon CDT (1 p.m. EDT) on Tuesday. That brought the total collected since the cap was installed to 51,364 barrels.
Hoping to calm rising passions, BP said it would donate revenues from the oil it is recovering to restore Gulf wildlife habitats. The company had already committed itself to cleaning up after the disaster.
The political heat remains intense as the disaster spills over into energy policy in Washington.
The Interior Department issued new safety and environmental requirements for companies that want to drill in shallow waters. They have until June 28 to show they have met the new requirements or face being shut down.
BP chief executive Tony Hayward was called to testify, for the first time, at a congressional hearing on June 17 that will focus on the company's role in the rig explosion and subsequent spill. BP said he would attend.
Another congressional committee investigating the spill sent a letter to rig operator Transocean that questioned whether the company had enough people working on Deepwater Horizon at the time of the explosion.
After the spill, the Obama administration imposed a six-month moratorium on new drilling permits for exploration and development wells in waters deeper than 500 feet. U.S. officials also refused to approve new drilling in shallow waters until new rules were issued.
A poll by two universities on Tuesday suggested a growing number of Americans want the United States to regulate greenhouse gas emissions as the spill boosts interest in petroleum alternatives.
About 77 percent of the 1,204 Americans surveyed support regulating carbon dioxide as a pollutant, up six percentage points from January, according to the poll by Yale and George Mason universities.
On the Gulf itself, many things remained murky.
Coast Guard Admiral Thad Allen, the top U.S. official overseeing the cleanup effort, said on Monday neither BP nor the government knew just how much oil was gushing out of the well. "That's the big unknown right now," he said.
BP has given conservative estimates of the oil flow that have been ridiculed by scientists and U.S. lawmakers. Even the government's much higher estimates of 12,000-19,000 barrels a day seemed on the low side after Allen said the company planned to double its collection of oil from the well to 20,000 barrels every day (840,000 gallons/3.18 million liters).
Allen said on Tuesday U.S. scientists would present revised estimates later this week or early next week. The panel of experts has said BP's latest effort to contain the oil spill could actually increase the flow rate by up to 20 percent.
BP and government officials have said a definitive solution will not come until August when a relief well is drilled.
"WHOSE ASS TO KICK"
Obama, who faces growing criticism that he has appeared detached from the economic and ecological catastrophe hitting four U.S. Gulf states, sharpened his criticism of BP in an interview with NBC's "Today" show that aired on Tuesday.
Obama said he was talking to experts to find out what had gone wrong "so I know whose ass to kick" over the spill, which has soiled 120 miles of U.S. coastline and threatens the Gulf Coast's lucrative fishing industry.
Fadel Gheit, an analyst at Oppenheimer and Co, said it was "not a coincidence" that BP's shares were down after Obama's comments increased pressure on the company to fix the mess.
In New York, BP's American depositary shares fell more than 5 percent, mirroring the losses in earlier London trading.
Transocean shares also tumbled in New York, trading to their lowest in 18 months, as the market worried about the company's liability for the oil disaster.
BP shares have lost about a third of their value since the crisis erupted. Investors are worried about the size of the final bill for the spill, expected to be in the billions.
The company has already spent more than $1 billion on cleaning up the slick, which has fouled wildlife refuges in Louisiana and barrier islands in Mississippi and Alabama and also sent tar balls ashore on beaches in Florida.
One-third of the Gulf's federal waters, or 78,000 square miles (200,000 square km), remains closed to fishing, and the toll of dead and injured birds and marine animals is climbing.
U.S. weather forecasters gave their first confirmation on Tuesday that some of the oil leaking from BP's well has lingered beneath the surface rather than rising to the top. Undersea oil depletes the water's oxygen content and threatens marine life like mussels, clams, crabs, eels and shrimp.
In Fort Jackson in southern Louisiana, the New Orleans Saints, winners of the National Football League's Super Bowl in February, held a rally to help lift the spirits of communities reeling from the spill.

The Latest on the Oil Spill
The amount of oil being collected as a result of a containment cap placed on the ruptured well last week has increased and is now up to 11,000 barrels a day, said Adm. Thad W. Allen of the Coast Guard. Federal studies have put the amount of oil spewing out of the stricken well at an estimated 12,000 to 25,000 barrels a day. As of midnight Sunday, a total of 27,700 barrels of oil had been collected.
A Second System Is Prepared
Admiral Allen said Monday that a second system was being prepared that would use pipes and other equipment installed for the failed “top kill” effort to collect oil from the well. That oil would be siphoned up to a rig, the Q4000, that is already on site.
BP Reports $1.25 Billion Spent
BP reported Monday that it had spent $1.25 billion so far on the cleanup and on related expenses.
Florida Fishing Area Is Reopened
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration opened 430 square miles of previously closed fishing area off the Florida Panhandle. The area closed to fishing now represents 78,264 square miles, approximately 32 percent of the federal waters in the Gulf of Mexico.

Doctor Who is a British science fiction television programme produced by the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC). The programme depicts the adventures of a mysterious and eccentric humanoid alien known as the Doctor who travels through time and space in his spacecraft, the TARDIS (an acronym for Time And Relative Dimensions In Space), which normally appears from the exterior to be a blue 1950s British police box. With his companions, he explores time and space, faces a variety of foes and rights wrongs.
Rose Tyler, a young shop assistant in a London department store, lives a humdrum and profoundly average life - until the night the shop dummies where she works wake up and try to kill her. Her life is saved by a strange man who only calls himself The Doctor, and intrigued by him, she finds herself thrown headlong into a hectic battle to stop an alien presence from invading Earth and annihilating the human race. She comes to learn that her new friend is even stranger than she thought - in fact, the Doctor's an alien adventurer called a 'Time Lord', seemingly the last of his race, who travels through time and space in his TARDIS battling evil where he finds it. And if she travels with him, she'll find herself witnessing the heat-death of the Earth five billion years in the future, meeting Charles Dickens in the past, and encountering lifeforms and invaders stranger than she'd ever thought possible. Only one thing is certain - it'll be the ride of a lifetime..

Islamic Extremist Group Recruits Americans for Civil War, Not Jihad
The Islamic extremist group in Somalia that two New Jersey men were seeking to join when they were arrested in New York on Saturday has recruited several hundred foreign fighters to help wage an intensifying civil war in a destitute East African country, American officials said on Sunday.

Two Arrested at Kennedy Airport on Terror Charges (June 7, 2010)
Times Topic: Al Shabab
But interest in the movement, Al Shabab, among American recruits appeared to have waned in recent years as news spread in Somali communities in Minneapolis and other cities that some of the recruits had been killed.
“Since the 2007-2008 period, when foreign fighters were flowing in, you haven’t heard about too many other Americans going there,” said Andre Le Sage, a senior research fellow who specializes in Africa at the National Defense University in Washington.
About 20 Americans have joined Al Shabab, and at least half a dozen have been killed in fighting in Somalia, according to their friends and relatives. Law enforcement officials fear that the recruits, often young men in their 20s who hold American passports, could be tapped to return to the United States to carry out attacks here, though so far there is no evidence of any such plot.
The arrests Saturday were the latest in a growing number of radicalized Americans who have been charged with terrorism-related offenses. They include Faisal Shahzad, a naturalized American citizen accused in the failed car bombing in Times Square last month.
“We have seen an increasing number of individuals here in the United States become captivated by extremist ideologies or causes,” John O. Brennan, President Obama’s counterterrorism chief, said last month.
American counterterrorism officials have been putting more focus on safe havens in Pakistan, Yemen and Somalia functioning as militant incubators. The United States has observed many ad hoc training camps in southern Somalia, intelligence officials said.
For several years, an intense civil war has raged in Somalia between a weak American-backed government and radical Islamist groups that are trying to overthrow it.
The insurgents include fighters from Al Shabab, which has sent hundreds of young recruits to the Somali capital, Mogadishu, and a rival group, Hizbul Islam.
The two groups used to be close, and their hard-line Islamist ideologies, which called for amputations and public stonings for violations of Islamic law, were virtually identical. American and Somali security officials said that the leaders of both groups have worked closely with wanted terrorists of Al Qaeda in Yemen and Pakistan. Yet in the past few months, as the government geared up for a major offensive, the two groups openly clashed with each other. And in recent days there have been reports that dozens of civilians have been wounded in areas held by insurgents and areas held by the government.
Moreover, the insurgents’ harsh rules prohibiting music, television and even bras, as well as the unrelenting fighting, have steadily alienated much of Somali society, making it harder for the militants to raise money and find recruits.
That did not seem to deter the two suspects arrested Saturday, Mohamed Mahmood Alessa, and Carlos Eduardo Almonte, who, according to the criminal complaint, discussed which of the rival groups to join. “Shabab is the main one,” Mr. Almonte told Mr. Alessa and an unidentified federal informer. “The main thing.”
Mr. Le Sage said that Al Shabab relied on mobilizing several thousand militia fighters from Somali clans, but that the foreigners could play important roles as commandos, intelligence agents or suicide bombers.
While Al Shabab have threatened to attack East African neighbors as well as Australia, the United States and Scandinavian countries, Mr. Le Sage said the organization had not yet carried out any strikes outside of Somalia. “That’s always a cause for concern,” he added.
The two suspects may have been misled in thinking that they were going to kill Americans in Somalia; there are actually very few in that country.
After 1993, when American forces were humiliated by clan militiamen in the episode that has come to be called Black Hawk Down, the United States has shown little appetite to send conventional forces back into Somalia.
But Al Shabab have been telling followers, for propaganda purposes, that the United States might get involved again.
There are American contractors working in Somalia managing logistics for the African Union peacekeepers there. Somali officials have also said that American intelligence agents frequently visit Somalia in an effort to improve the capacity of Somalia’s fledgling security services.

The Office is a mockumentary that documents the exploits of a paper supply company in Scranton, Pennsylvania. There are American contractors working in Somalia managing logistics for the African Union peacekeepers there. Somali officials have also said that American intelligence agents frequently visit Somalia in an effort to improve the capacity of Somalia’s fledgling security services.

Plot Summary
The Office is a mockumentary that documents the exploits of a paper supply company in Scranton, Pennsylvania. Made up of head chief Michael Scott, a harmlessly deluded and ignorantly insensitive boss who cares about the welfare of his employees while trying to put his own spin on company policy. With an office including the likes of various peers who have their own hangups, The Office (2005) takes a look at the lives of its co-workers: bored but talented salesman Jim, his mildly sociopathic, butt kissing enemy Dwight, mildly righteous receptionist Pam, and indifferent temp Ryan...

The suspect had been Padovese's driver for the last four-and-a- half years, the official, Mehmet Celalettin Lekesiz, was quoted as saying by the semi-official Anatolia news agency.
Padovese was stabbed in his summer mansion and died en route to a hospital in the town of Iskenderun of Hatay province in southern Turkey.

Plot Summary
Two and a Half Men is an American television comedy series which premiered on CBS on September 22, 2003.
The Harper brothers Charlie and Alan are almost opposites but form a great team. After years they had little in common except their dislike for their mundane, maternally cold but domineering mother Evelyn, Allan, a compulsively neat chiropractor and control-freak, is thrown out by his manipulative wife Judith who nevertheless gets him to pay for everything and do most jobs in the house. Charlie, a freelance jingle composer in a luxurious beach-house and irresistible Casanova who rarely gets up before brunch around noon, puts him up 'temporarily' with his son Jake, a lazy fat school kid who shuttles between his parents. This starts off the sitcom around their conflicting lifestyles, such as how to raise the boy (who now has an efficient, caring dad for the boring stuff while having a ball with his fun-loving sugar uncle who teaches him boyish things), be moralistic or have fun, a stickler or popular, what's a 'white' lie... Other fairly regular characters include Charlie's fat cleaning lady Bertha and his rich, obsessively infatuated neighbor-girl Rose who often sneaks in..
