Halloween Festival

Stormy skies and pouring rain added to the haunting atmosphere of the village's first Halloween Festival

Although organizer Anita Boyer was sure the weather hurt attendance, she was happy to see people having a good time and enjoying the activities.
"The weather has not been our friend," Boyer said as she set up the silent auction table. "The weather, I know, kept people away. We had to hold off (activities) because of the rain."
Boyer got her inspiration for the festival from watching "Gilmore Girls." On the show, the girls conducted a festival every month with few if any problems.
"It's always easier on TV," Boyer laughed. "I just thought it would be something fun for the community, not just tourists."
A popular event with eight contestants was the Hot Dog Eating Contest. A plate filled with 10 frankfurters in buns was placed in front of each participant. The person who could finish all 10 first or the most in five minutes was the winner.
Different techniques were used. One person ate two hot dogs at a time. Another sipped water between bites. The winner, Patrick Hatfield, of Conesville, polished off six in the allotted five minutes.
Hatfield won a festival T-shirt for his efforts. He has entered other eating contests and has won a watermelon eating contest in Columbus in the past.
